The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures

The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures offers an education in the languages, cultures, and literature of Asia. Students acquire linguistic and transcultural competence in one or more regions of Asia and get to know Asia as a dynamic site of international cultural relations.

Asian Studies Graduate Cluster

Faculty in the Asian Studies Graduate Cluster (ASGC) offer comprehensive yet focused exposure to Asian cultures, histories, and societies with an emphasis on transdisciplinary research and methodologies. The program trains students in advanced research and interdisciplinary studies across the humanities and social sciences.

Highlight

The Kakehashi Project

�鶹��³�Ʒ students pose for a photo in Japan’s National Diet Buidling — a governmental institution that holds sessions with the House of Representatives and House of Councillors.

In December 2023, seven �鶹��³�Ʒ Japanese language students traveled to Japan (Tokyo and Hakodate) for an eight-day immersion trip, funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and by invitation of the Japan International Cooperation Center (JICE). The relationship with JICE and travel coordination are managed by the Office of the Vice President for International Relations (VPIR). In Tokyo, the students immersed themselves in the city's rich cultural history — visiting museums, shrines, and gardens, as well as the Imperial Palace and Diet Building. In Hakodate, they spent two nights with a homestay family, practicing Japanese and taking part in local customs and traditions, and joined a holiday party organized by the Hokkaido International Foundation. This was the third time �鶹��³�Ʒ was invited to participate in this selective program.
